CARRIAGES, BRICKS, AND ICE CREAM

St. Peters had its own carriage factory at one time. Owned by Charlie Waye, this shop was located on the Cardigan road, near the

Sparrow Road corner. According to Colin Macdonald, this shop succumbed to the pressure of the manufactors from Ontario” due to the

Island’s entrance into Confederation in 1873. (41) There was a brick making establishment on the East Side of the

Cardigan Road located in a field owned by Joe McKenzie. According to George Mclnnis:

They had a brick maker to direct business and all the labor was done by the Parish. The Bishop had an elder for each district and on Sunday he told from the pulpit each Elder what day he was to
