Dwan’s Mill in Farmington.

The house next to the mill (in front) was owned by the Dwan family at this time, and was later owned by Carl Wood. The house in the back, and to the left of the mill was owned by Phil Bolger. This is the site of where Stephen Wood currently has his home. The other house at the back, and to the right was owned by Jim Bolger.

The first mention of this mill located in Farmington was around the turn of the century in 1895—1896, run by Dick and Jack Dwan. Patrick MacInnis remembers his mother telling him that every day at Dwan‘s Mil1 a whistle was blown at noon and it was unusual to hear whistles going off in Farmington at that time. (66) The lumber for the church in St. Charles were milled at Dwan‘s Mill and hauled to the building site in St- Charles. Carl Wood had a mill in the same vicinity later on.

There were many, many other mills within the fire district of St. Peters at one time. There was a mill on the Cardigan Road owned by Charles C. Hayden. Oatmeal was made, flour ground, and there was also a sawmill at this location. It was later sold to a Mr. Vaniderstine. McDonald and McEachern operated a saw and gristmill in Monticello. On the Fortune Road, Burge’s Mill operated on a stream about five miles from the village; it was later powered by steam.
