TAVERNS2 TANNERIES, TAILORS & SHOEMAKERS

One of the earliest listed taverns in St. Peters appeared in the Royal Gazette in 1832, which listed Edward Cooke, St. Peters Bay, as a “Licensed Retailer of Spirituous Liquors." (70) Mrs. J. Hendricken of Monticello was listed as a “tavern keeper” in Teare’s Directory for 1880- 1881. Although the date is unknown, there was a distillery operated by Maclnnis’ on the Pine Brook where the Starch Factory was later built. These same Maclnnis, who were also renowned shipbuilders, also had a store and tannery on this same site as their distillery.

John Sutherland, who had the first post office, was also listed as having a tannery in 1864. An advertisement in the Herald for 1864

announced: (71) NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC:

The Subscriber will pay at the Office of the City Tannery FOUR PENCE HALFPENNY

Per pound, CASH, for and quantity of OX and COW, HIDES, and market

prices for sheepskins, as quoted in Ross's Weekly. Agents throughout the Island will be guided as to price to be paid for the sheepskins by the Weekly, and the amount per pound for hides.
