Heartz. born in 1871, frequently traveled to Souris with his father from Charlottetown, and recalled:

We went to Souris every year since I was two. We traveled by horse and wagon and the trip took about seven hours. I remember we generally stopped at Midgell all the travelers stopped there. A woman kept an Inn and the large sign up over the door proclaimed THE WIDOW DINGWELL. I can remember an able looking woman with a large bunch of keys at her waist. (85)

The Bay View Hotel was located in the same location that the Black Bear Inn had been located in. Established by Donald and Margaret McLaine, the Bay View hotel was a family business. In 1904, The Hotel appeared in a listing for hotels across the Island, and stated that it had ten accommodations at $1.25 a day and $5.00 a week. (86) Donald died when his son Roy was fifteen years old. Roy’s daughter Lexie MacLean recalls memories of her family’s business:

I have to give Margaret credit because after Donald died she did all the work. They had a lot of what was called “travelers.” Today we would call them salesmen. They came out by train and they’d be met at the train, stay at the hotel, and taken to wherever they had to

go by horse and wagon, and later by car. (87)
