EARLY ROADS LEADING TO ST. PETERS

Driving over our present roads and highways, it is difficult to i imagine their early beginnings as no more than paths made by the early 2 Settlers. The portage trails used by the Mi’Kmaq were the first paths made across the Island and were inevitably located close to a bay or riVer. An example of one such trail extended from the Fortune River to ‘ the St. Peters River. (1) It is Jean Pierre de Roma, a merchant from France, who can be Credited with establishing the first road to the St. Peters area. In 1731, a
