Meacham’s Atlas of 1880 and Cummings Atlas of 1928 are two of the best sources in researching how the names of roads have changed. Many of the road names listed in 1880 are currently in use, such as the “St. Peters Road,” the “Cable Head Road,” the “Cardigan Road,” and the “Greenwich Road.” There are also a few names that differentiate from those used today. What is commonly referred to as “The Bay Hill” was once called the “Portage Road.” The road running along the north shore through the communities of Goose River and Monticello was called the “Cape Road.” The Fortune Road was referred to as the “Bay Fortune Road,” and the road running though Selkirk was the “Big Marsh Road.”

In the 1928 Atlas, the “Shore Road," the “Captains Road,” and the “Forest Hill Road” appeared. The “Portage Road" had been changed to the “Northside Road,” and the “Cardigan Road” which appeared in the 1880 Atlas had then been named the “St. Peters Road.”
