Many people within the community still recall memories of the war. Sad recollections of Witnessing stationmaster Vince Murphy delivering telegrams to inform families their boys had been killed in action, or were missing, will always linger in the community. Anna Rattray recalled the “blackouts” which were enforced in that “Being a child, it was scary. If your light was on these home front fellows would come and see your light and they would tell yOu to make a better job of covering your window.” (7)
During the wartime, the communities on the Island were busy. Women organized to provide food, clothes, and other necessities for the soldiers overseas. (8) Groups such as the Women’s Institutes knitted socks, rolled bandages and raised funds for such groups as the Red Cross and the Canadian Y.M.C.A War Services Fund. (9) Parcels sent by locals to their family members often contained food, socks, and Cigarettes. Some local women worked with the Red Cross during the war.
