Veterans at the Bay By Peter A. Riley 10th July, i 947 The early morning haze was lifting As the sun was breaking thru From the east on the horizon And was burning up the dew. The wind was blowing from the westward And the tide was on the flow As the boats roared up the harbor To St. Peters for the show. Planes were zooming in the heavens And the floats were in the Bay 'Neath the tents upon the hill-top Where lively music played. Vendors popped the corn and bottles Others scooped the ice-cream cones While the bowling alleys rattled To the falling pins and bones. Gar and Ada, Norm and Johnnie Bruce and Lena - all were there In the happy throng of natives To enjoy the county fair. Dishes sparkled on the tables Food was plentiful and rich Pies and cakes were in abundance And the music was in pitch Cakes were auctioned to the bidders Ata fancy price and fee Some as high as eighteen dollars For the cake of G. Mac . B. Far into the evening shadows And the midnight's witching hour Couples danced to jigs and strathraes And the reels of Lord MacDower ' Then the picnic of the Veterans Held at old Bade Adieu to happy dancers In the dawning of the day. 357
