■ - ■ This picture dates back to 1916. The interior of the church was decorated to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Fr. Ronald B. MacDonald 's ordination. The first priest to lead mass in the new church was Rev. Ronald B . MacDonald. During the period of his pastorate, two significant growths occurred in the parish. The original convent, built in 1881, was becoming too small to accommodate the increasing number of students. In 1919, with a generous monetary donation by Father MacDonald, a large annex was built onto the original structure which gave the necessary room and conveniences required for a modern school of learning. Also during the pastorate of Rev. R.B MacDonald , a mission chapel, dedicated to St. Joseph, was erected at Red Point . Mass in this chapel was primarily held during the summer months as a convenience for those parishioners living in the eastern extremity of the parish. The parish discontinued use of this chapel in the mid 1970s and the chapel was subsequently sold to Andy Gilbert , who in turn sold the property to a couple from Connecticut who use it as a summer home. Tragedy soon struck the parish again. On March 10, 1929, shortly after Easter confessions were held that evening, fire again ravaged St. Mary's Church. The loss was devastating. The sandstone walls were all that remained standing as the rest of the church lay in ashes. Elder members of the parish remember this fire in great detail. One member of the parish, who lived a mile away, remembers as a child seeing the glow from the flames lighting up the walls of her bedroom. The fire was believed to have been caused by a faulty flue.
