This picture which was taken in 1972, shows part of the large house built for Captain William Richards in Bideford. It is presently owned by David and Anne Dixon. The portion of the house that was moved to Tyne Valley is now owned by June Adams. —FROM PAULINE

The Richards men erected a building on their property that was used in their shipbuilding enterprise and also as a meeting hall. When the Bideford schoolhouse was destroyed by fire on December 13, 1914 the Richards building was moved to the location where the schoolhouse had been. It served as a schoolhouse until Bideford and Ellerslie school dis- tricts amalgamated. It was then sold and used as a workshop.
Susannah Richards died on December 16, 1901 from burns she received when her clothing caught fire as she was carrying live coals from one part of the house to another to kindle or revive another fire. The rest of the family was at church at the time. She was 77 years of age. Hon. Captain Richards died in Port Hill on Feb. 16, 1914 at the age of 94. They are both buried in St. James Anglican Cemetery, Port Hill.
James William Richards, the elder son born in 1852, was educated in pub- lic school, St. Dunstan's College and graduated from a commercial insti- tution in Saint John. He began his business career at Bideford where he was associated with his father in carrying on extensive industrial and mer— cantile operations. For about two years he resided in England where he
