He was transferred to the Royal Air Force on April 1, 1918 and his trade was Fitter (Engine). He miraculously escaped when a small plane he was in crashed—his most seri¬ ous injury being a broken ankle. Following that he was assigned duty in Texas , training soldiers. On his Certificate of Discharge dated January 9, 1919 was stated: Character Very Good (the highest character awarded in the raf).
