The conjectured location of the area from which 200 red pine trees were extracted for masts by the department of the Marine during the winter of 1727-1728. Soil maps (MacDougalI et al. 1988) indicate that the sandy Culloden soil series, which is likely to have favoured red pine, occurs just to the west of the likely location of the portage. The location of a stand of red pine trees extant in 2001 (the so— called Canavoy Pines), many of which are of the same size as those harvested by the French, is also shown.
