Dr. Frank’s house at Rosebank Dad on the left with Leo Frank. Dad always had a cigar in his mouth.
Dr. Frank was a very interesting person. He came from New York to purchase several pairs of silver foxes but was so impressed with the Island that he decided to stay. He purchased 30 acres of the original Rosebank farm from James Trainor and established the Rosebank Fur Farm Limited. He was very successful and sold foxes as far away as Japan and Russia. He built a large house in Rosebank, with the entranceway on Langley Road, and furnished it with ornate Japanese teak which he purchased on one of his trips to Japan. This house is now owned by Warren and Arlene Hood. When he left the Island, he donated his furniture to St. Dunstan’s University. He and—his wife became friends of my parents, and I remember visiting his home. At that time, it seemed strange to me to see this beautiful big house in the middle of a field which was almost impossible to access in the winter. The Keppoch, Langley and Rosebank roads were not paved at that time. I recently learned that the house was only used as a summer residence. Apparently, Mr. Frank resided at the Revere Hotel for the winter months. This hotel was located where the Business Development Bank
building now stands. Mr. Frank was of Lithuanian Jewish origin and was a good friend of Israel's first woman Prime Minister, Golda Meir. She visited Mr. Frank before she became Prime Minister and would take walks along the shore in front of my summer cottage at Rosebank.
