Because I did not excel in languages or sciences, my obvious choice for a degree was business administration, which was offered at St. Dunstan's. I became a day student in my sophomore year, which meant that I lived at home and attended classes during the day. Most of the students lived on campus and came from all over the Island, other parts of Canada and the New England States. I felt I was missing some of the college spirit by being a day student, so for the next three years I lived on campus.
Some of the students could not understand why I would stay on campus and be subjected to institutional type meals and the rules and regulations of the University. I really did not find the meals all that bad. One of the problems was that you knew what you were going to get every meal, every day. Every morning you got oatmeal except for Sunday when you got cold cereal. On Fridays you got mackerel. At our table of eight, there were four students that came from fishing communities and they hated mackerel. That was all right by me because I loved mackerel.
