When Alphy and Edmond returned from the woods, their snowshoes were missing. They asked Mary Anne if anyone had taken them. Mary Anne responded that she didn't know where they were. A few days later, Alphy and Edmond found their snowshoes near a clearing in the woods. They had been broken so badly, they were beyond repair. Alphy felt sure it was Mary Anne who had done this.* When he asked her again she replied, "They were no good anyway." Alphy felt this was the biggest hurt Mary Anne had ever caused him, and one which would not easily be forgiven. *It is unclear who broke the snowshoes, as there was a houseĀ¬ hold full of children in the Doucette home at the time, but Alphy blamed Mary Anne for breaking them. 25
