ST. COLUMBA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH St. Columba ranks as one of the oldest Presbyterian congregations on Prince Edward Island , the first church being erected on land deeded by Mr. Donald MacBeath in 1830. According to the Deed of Conveyance the property was transferred from Donald McBeath to the trustees of the Church. The deed reads in part...7%w Indenture made the second day of March in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty between Donald McBeath of Township number thirty four (34) in Prince Edward Island , farmer, and Elizabeth his wife of the one part and John Ferguson , Donald Stewart , John Cairns and Neil Stewart all of the said Island, Prince Edward , farmers, of the other part....in consideration of the sum of three pounds current money of the said Island...that plot of land consisting of one square acre of ground situated on the said Township No. 34 in Prince Edward Island and Canada is as follows, that is to say on the east by the western boundary line of the said John Ferguson 's land and northerly by the King's Highway leading from Charlottetown to Saint Peter's and commonly called the Saint Peter's Road and on the south and west by the farm of the said Donald McBeath together with all buildings, fences..etc. An article in the Royal Gazette of April 5th, 1831, refers to the Presbyterian Church on St. Peter 's Road and lists as trustees the following men: Mr. Donald Stewart , Mr. John Ferguson , Mr. John Cairns , Mr. Neil Stewart , and Mr. Peter Stewart . St. Columba Church, known for many years as the St. Peter 's Road Church, was organized as a congregation of the Church of Scotland and received occasional services from the Rev. Donald MacDonald . 1843 saw the division of the Church of Scotland into two strands, the Kirk and the Free Church. Because of this, for a period of about twenty-three years there was more than one Presbyterian Church Congregation in Marshfield . In the year 1854, the Rev. James Allan , acting under instructions from the Presbytery of Prince Edward Island of the Presbyterian Church of Nova Scotia, opened a preaching station on the St. Peter 's Road. This place was also supplied with preaching by the Kirk of Scotland , and by the Free Church Presbytery of Prince Edward Island . Photo by Donna Thompson St. Columba Presbyterian Church, 2000 Built 1864 In 1860 in order to more efficiently manage and conduct the affairs and interests of the Church, an Act to incorporate was passed by the Council and Assembly of Prince Edward Island under and by the name of "The Minister and Trustees of Saint Columba's Church, Blair -in- Athol , on Saint Peter's Road" in connection with the Kirk of Scotland . The body corporate consisted of the Minister and following trustees: Mr. Neil Stewart , Mr. Isaac Thomson , Mr. Alexander Robertson , Mr. William MacDonald , and Mr. John Scott MacLeod . In 1861 Rev. George Grant was inducted into the Pastoral Charge of St. Columba ( St. Peter 's Road), Road ( Harrington ), and Georgetown . Dr. Grant later became principal of Queen's University in Kingston Ontario . This church was blown down by a severe gale in 1860, so those adhering to the Church of Scotland erected another church in 1864 near the site of the first church.
