Central United Church a month, with emphasis on support for overseas missions. Boxes of clothing were shipped and financial support provided for the needy overseas as well as in Canada . Locally, the WMS purchased items for the church and supported the Mission Band and the Baby Band . Funds were raised by special church services, teas and festivals. The Mission Band included children ages 6-12 years and promoted missionary education. The Baby Band was formed in 1955 under the direction of Mrs. Roy Dennis and brought together mothers with children up to five years of age for spiritual and social occasions. The United Church Women . In 1962, following the adoption of a report by General Council, the ladies of the Central United Church organized as the United Church Women with Maud ( Mrs. John ) Thompson as the first president. The UCW Purpose states, "to unite all women of the congregation for the total mission of the church, and to provide a medium through which we may express our loyalty and devotion to Jesus Christ in Christian witness, fellowship and service." The UCW has been responsible for the janitorship of the church from 1965 to the present day. They contribute to the Board of Stewards, the Mission and Service Fund, Memorial Fund, Sunday School, and many charities. They provide refreshments for social gatherings at the church, visit the sick and shut-in throughout the year, and assist with the Men's Association annual dinner. Over the years, funds have been raised through sales of recipe books and bake sales. An annual Tea and Bazaar, hosted by the UCW, continues to be held and proceeds are shared with the Sunday School. The UCW fulfills a vital role in the life of Central United Church. The Men's Association The Men's Association was formed in 1955 for the men of the York- Pastoral Charge.
