follower. Mom and Dad allowed me to take the car to school when 1 was in Grade Ten and I recall Rolla and I would take turns asking to go out and we'd listen to the Soap Opera on the radio. We didn't have to wait long to follow those stories. Those days were good in my memory. I was the only one in my class from One to Ten, but we were like a family, we usually spent eight to ten years with the same group, adding or losing one or two a year. You learned to get along. I don't recall bullying - I remember being protective of my little sister Judy when she started school. That's the way it was - we looked after each other and the teacher looked after us all. Years later, having returned from Ottawa, one of my girls was studying for an exam at the kitchen table by lamplight, because the power had gone off. She looked up at me and remarked, "I can't believe this, you did your lessons this way and got through it all!" Point Prim School, 1962. [Photo courtesy of Viola Gillis .] 145
