Presbyterian Elders Prior to 1821, the Presbyterian churches on Prince Edward Island were run as missions under the direction of the Nova Scotia Presbytery. With the formation of the Prince Edward Island Presbytery in 1821, the governing of the churches became an Island matter. In 1822, the first elders were inducted to run the Lot 14 and Lot 16 churches and direct the minister. Rev. William MacGregor was the first minĀ¬ ister in the Lot 16 Church to work with elders under the ausĀ¬ pices of the Prince Edward Island Presbytery. In Presbyterian tradition, an elder served for life, once elected. Thus, it was by no means a position to consider lighdy, either in casting the vote, or in the acceptance of the role. Only men of Godly nature and upstanding moral character were considered. In those early days, the role of the church elder certainly differed from the role the elder plays today. Those early elders involved themselves in the moral and spiritual behaviour of the congregational members. They served almost as judge and jury and upheld what today would be known as civil law. Minutes of the session of 1821 through 1844 showed the session met frequendy to deal with many matters such as the sacrament, membership admittance to the church, baptism of children, marriage, the sin of fornication, unruly conduct, intoxication, and determining the truth of midwives' reports regarding the birth of full term babies to recendy married couples. Also considered were reports of people working on Sunday, immoral practices (such as going to hear a Methodist preacher), false promises of marriage to 84 United Church and Its People
