Rev. Dr. Edwin Russell Woodside (1932-1937)

Edwin Russell Woodside was born February 8, 1903, son of A. William Woodside and Carrie Maude (Thomp— son) Woodside of Darnley, Prince Edward Island. He was educated in Darnley Public School, Dalhousie University, and Pine Hill Divinity Hall, Nova Scotia. \Nhile studying for the ministry, he spent three summers on mission fields in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Nova Scotia.

On Nov. 21,1926, Mr. Woodside was recommended by the session of Princetown United Church, Malpeque as a candidate for the Christian ministry. He was ordained at closing ceremonies of Maritime Confer- ence injune, 1930. The following day he married Dorcas Sullivan of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Their first charge was Lot 16-Lot 14 Pastoral Charge.

With the outbreak of WW II, Russell became a chaplain in the R.C.A.F. with headquarters at Scoudouc. During his time in the air force, his wife and children resided in Summerside. The Woodsides had three daughters: Ann (Mrs. Donald Thompson), Beryl (MrsJames Laishley), andJoan (Mrs. Wesley Triplet). Following the war, Rev. Woodside served pastorates in Tryon and Cornwall, Prince Edward Island and in Bathurst, New Brunswick.

1980 marked fifty years of active ministry for Rev. Wood- side, and honour was paid to him by the United Church. All denominations in the Bathurst area were pleased to partici- pate in the celebration. He is remembered as a very active and outgoing individual, ecumenical in his approach.

Upon retirement, Rev. and Mrs. Woodside purchased a house in Bathurst. During his last years, he suffered from a severe heart condition which greatly curtailed his activities. He died in 1982 and was buried in the Bathurst United Church Cemetery. Mrs. Woodside remained in their home until her death in 1986.
