Rev. Vans MacLean Ministers from Our Congregation The Presbyterian and United Church community of Lot 16 witnessed a number of its members take up the call of the ministry. Rev. Vans MacLean (1891-1971) The Rev. Brenton Vans MacLean was born in Lot 16 on October 27, 1891, the son of William James and Isabelle (Smith) MacLean. As the Rev. R. G. Vans was the min¬ ister at Presbyterian Church in 1891 it seems quite likely that Mr. and Mrs. MacLean named their baby boy after the minister of the day. Vans was an excellent student and attended Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown . Upon completing his course at PWC, he attended the Presbyterian institution of Dalhousie University, graduating 1918 with a Bachelor Degree in Arts and Science. In 1918, he entered Pine Hill Divinity College under the sponsor¬ ship of the session of the Lot 16 Presbyterian Church. Upon graduation in 1921, he was ordained and settled in Tyne Valley , Prince Edward Island . That year, he married Beatrice Campbell , an accomplished musi¬ cian; their union spanned thirty-four years. Rev. MacLean served in Tyne Valley until 1923 when he answered a call to Glen Sandfield Pastoral Charge of the Glengarry Presbytery of the Montreal and Ottawa Conference. In 1925, Rev. and Mrs. MacLean moved to the Montreal ; also of the M& O Conference . 1928 brought a move to the Lanark Pastoral Charge of the Bay of Quinte Conference. 9 In 1936, Rev. Vans , at age 45, joined the staff of the Canadian Bible Society (CBS). He served the Society in both Renfrew and Ottawa. The General Secretary, Dr. Kenneth MacMillian , paid Rev. Vans this tribute of his twenty years work with the Society. " Mr. MacLean was a hard working, devoted District Secretary; we shall remember him with grati¬ tude."10 Following his retirement from the CBS in 1956, Rev. Vans served for one year as minister of the Mount Stewart Pastoral Charge on Prince Edward Island . Ill health followed 140 United Church and Its People
