was very careful when planting this new variety of seed. He made sure that each tuber was planted the same distance apart in the soil, and that the soil contained the proper nutrients. This variety of potatoes are still grown on Prince Edward Island today.

Joseph was interested in improving his property. One day he was in the East Baltic area, and noticed pink and white lilies protruding through a pond of water. He immediately dug some up, took them home, and started his own lily pond. He tried to purchase more from the Experimental Farm, so that he might have a variety but they had no new colors to offer at that time.

Joseph liked to take his children on new adventures, where they could travel and be exposed to different places. Once he took Joe and Pat to Charlottetown on the train to see the Queen, who was touring the Island. On the return trip, Pat was sitting with her friends and her father thought that she was aboard the right train. Panic struck when Joe went to look for her and discovered that she was not on board. She had entered the wrong train, and was now enroute to Georgetown. Joe quickly alerted the conductor, who informed the engineer on the other train, and before long, the train was backing up with a distraught little Pat on board. Joseph was a very relieved father, and needless to say, he never let Pat out of his sight again.

Pat enjoyed living on the farm, but one particular rooster was her worst enemy. If he saw her out in the yard, he would tackle her with great vengeance. Her only resort was to take refiige on top of the truck wagon, or some other remote area. On one occasion, the rooster was too smart for Pat, and he chased her all the way across the road to the neighbor’s house. Her loud screaming alerted the neighbor, and the old lady had to escort her home. Pat was embarrassed and never wanted to be a poultry farmer after that.

One would expect that such a happy union between Joseph and Mary Bell would last a life time, but it did not turn out that way. i

It was June 1, 1943, when Joseph was starting to cultivate the land in preparation for planting the potato crop. Mary Bell could see the field from the window, and noticed that the horses were not moving.
