A History of Elmsdale, Elmsdale West, and Brockton, Prince Edward Island
As the population grew and more vehicles used the roads, more demand was put on gov- ernment to build more and bet— ter roads. Finally during the Alberton Exhibition, the pre- mier, Thane A. Campbell de- clared the “Official Western Opening of Through Highway on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 1940”. The main Island highway now extended from Souris to Alberton.

An ad announcing the option of ratepayers to perform labour on the roads instead of paying cash for their property taxes The Curran§md Briggs Construction
Company are busy moving their men
and machinery here (Elmsdale) to prepare the road from Elmsdale Corner through to Tignish for paving.
Whatever the reason for opening a new road, it was successful only after years of backbreaking work by the pioneer performing his required statute labour. The spread— ing network of roads became an indication of the growth of each settlement. Today
we are grateful to these adventurous folk who led the way to the much—improved roads and highways .of today.
Wallace A. Thomson of Elmsdale wrote a letter to the editor of the Summerside Journal which Was printed in the February 29, 1940 issue. Here is part of that letter:
