Mind May m* mm The Summer side Journal, May 13,1936 An ad announcing the option of ratepayers to perform labour on the roads instead of paying cash for their property taxes As the population grew and more vehicles used the roads, more demand was put on gov¬ ernment to build more and bet¬ ter roads. Finally during the Alberton Exhibition, the pre¬ mier, Thane A. Campbell de¬ clared the "Official of on Wednesday, Sept. 11,1940". The main Island highway now extended from Souris to Alberton . By September 23, 1947 the Elmsdale notes in the Island Farmer reported: The Curran and Briggs Construction Company are busy moving their men and machinery here ( Elmsdale ) to prepare the road from Corner through to Tignish for paving. Whatever the reason for opening a new road, it was successful only after years of backbreaking work by the pioneer performing his required statute labour. The spread¬ ing network of roads became an indication of the growth of each settlement. Today we are grateful to these adventurous folk who led the way to the much-improved roads and highways of today. Wallace A.
