GOIN' TO THE CORNER Ail automobile cm me up from Charlottetown on Suwiay, parsed through Summer«ide and ecems to have run wheresoever it listed westward, on military duty, in search ft is said, of some darters. The Automobile Association is probing the matter to see that the driver was •trickly within his right* and eolejy upon the military duty as assumed. The Association has entered an action for this purpose against Mr W K Rogers * of Charlottetown , for the illegal use of the highways of on the day named. Mr Rogers will probably appear ,td answer the charge before Stipendiary Wright at •nmraerside on Monday next. When Mr. Rogers and the others with him came to Elmsdale, they drove up the to the deserter's home arriving about 5 o'clock in the evening. They did not find him at home. From there, they drove back to Elmsdale and on to Tignish in order to get something to eat and some gasoline. On the return trip Mr. Rogers stated that they left Tignish shortly after midnight going through once again to the to the deserter's home. The house was in darkness but just after they ar¬ rived a team drove into the yard. The military men went over to the wagon and the deserter was heard to say, "Oh, all right, I will go back." On the way to and from the western part of PEI they met a number of horses. As was expected - the car would come to a stop; one of the men in the car would go to the head of the horse and lead it safely by the automobile. They eventu¬ ally delivered the deserter to the sanatorium and arrived back in Charlottetown the next morning about 8:00 o'clock. This is the first recorded trip of an automobile through Elmsdale - albeit an illegal act. The following newspaper report was written June 29,1932: Mr. Bruce Brennan of Elmsdale is in Prince County Hospital suffering from hip injuries and shock as a result of an accident at Elmsdale on Sunday when the wagon in which he was driving was struck by an automobile. He was accompanied at the time by Mr. and Mrs. Parmenus J. MacArthur of Elmsdale . The party were on their way to church and had just turned the corner when struck by a car. Mr. Brennan was thrown quite a distance. He is 70 years old and his condition is serious. Mr. and Mrs. MacArthur were both bruised and are suffering from shock. This was possibly one of the first accidents involving an automobile to take place in the community of Elmsdale . Another accident is reported in the Summerside Jour¬ nal November 6,1939: The Island Farmer, 20 Sept. 1916, p. 5 The controversial W.K. Rogers automobile ride in 1916 48
