Later when the railroad came, around 1875, the railroad was forced to build a fence all along its route. The first fence was built of wood, and then the first wire fence £39,: was introduced by the railroad. Later the farmers used barbed wire-fencing. Then the electric fence was used — a battery was hooked up to the wire to electrify it and any animal or person coming in contact with the wire would get a shock of electricity. Again this would not hold back sheep, as their wool served as insulation against the
electric flow.

When farmers began to clear the wooded area of a newly purchased farm, grain would be sown between the stumps as they cut down the trees. This helped rot the stumps more rapidly, making it easier to remove the stumps with the roots. All this
