The James W. O’Brien farm, Dock Road
George Hardy and James O’Brien, both farmers from the Dock Road, owned and operated hay presses. '
THE SALERS FIELD DAY In the 19803 three local farmers became interested in a breed of cattle known as Salers. The farmers were Alton Williams, Willie Dunbar of Alma and Reg McKenna, a former resident living then at Mill River. This particular breed of cattle originated in the Saler Valley, France, an area near the border of Switzerland.
A Salers Field Day was held at Alton Williams’s farm inwElmsdale. Four calves were among the 19 Salers at the show and they were judged by Gerry Grant. Willie Dunbar won the trophy for the best calf. Exhibitors came from PEI and Nova Scotia. Salers are a popular choice for cross breeding as they are noted as easy calving cattle. The calves have small heads and slight shoulders and grow quickly.
