By September 25, 1947, according to the Summerside Journal the construction had begun and by December 1, 1947 the store was open for business. Prior to the open- ing of the store it was noted in the Summerside Journal: “Saturday November 15, 1947 a chicken supper sponsored by the WMS of the United Church was held in Johnston’s Store and was a decided success.
A capacity crOwd enjoyed the sumptuous repast.”
Jim also had an egg grading station built in May 1948 by George Adams, and a feed
warehouse built in September 1948. The
store was stocked with everything you would find in a country, store such as dry goods,
groceries, packaged meats, some clothing
and hardware. From the Summerside Jour- nal December 9,1948 we findthat: “ .s.ev- eral car loads of oats have been shipped lately Blanche Bowness and a quarebriggs Con. Which hasn’t happened for some years. The Jim Johnston, store owner
