A History of Elmsdale, Elmsdale West, and Brockton, Prince Edward Island
family were: Lillian Matthews, Lorna (Hardy) McNeill, Carol Cotton,-Janet Hardy, Fabiola Doiron, Dora Gavin, Linda (Ramsay) Adams, Linda O’Halloran, Darrell Hardy, Diane Shields and Gail (Fraser) Gallant. In 1987 the family sold the business to Blair and Judy (O’Brien) Hansen of Charlottetown.
Elmsdale IGA - Blair and Judy Hansen continued at first under the name Adams’ Red and White but by June 6, 1987 they changed the store name to IGA. Robert Morrissey, Minister of Transportation assisted in cutting the ribbon to officially open the Elmsdale IGA. When the store first opened, Blanche Hardy and Roberta Wallace stayed about two weeks and helped to familiarize the new staff with the running of a store and also showed Larry O’Brien the new manager, how to cut the meat. The next meat cutter was Bill Ellsworth, who later worked for Judy and Blair at their Bloomfield IGA. Lorna McNeill took over as manager when Larry left, and other clerks were: Carol Cotton, Linda Jeffery, Frances Wallace, Fabiola Doiron and Joe Callaghan. Things that were added included Video rentals, ice cream, and a fitness centre in the basement known as Elmsdale Body Design, operated by Nancy Williams and Marilyn Coughlin. ‘
In February 1992 the Department of Highways purchased the IGA building, demol- ishing it so that the highway intersection could be widened. Blair and Judy then bought the Bloomfield Mall, re- named it the Midwest Mall and
moved the IGA business to that lo- cation.
