Farmers who churned their oWn butter were to report it to a government agency and were allowed to use only a certain amount of what they churned. It was a difficult

time to raise a family during wartime.

WWII took more lives and caused more destruction than any other war. WWII be- gan in September 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. Canada greatly expanded its output during WWII. Wartime expansion made Canada a leading industrial power by the war’s end. Millions of women joined the labour force during WWII after men left for combat. They worked in shipyards, aircraft factories and filled many jobs previously held by men. Island women'replaced men on farms as well as in facto- ries. They helped raise the crops that fed allied troops.

The Canadian government paid for the cost of WWII in several ways. One method was by borrowing from individuals and businesses through selling them war bonds, certificates, notes and stamps. They raised several billion dollars.
