Mom and Dad, younger years Parents on their honeymoon

Transportation in those days was by boat and the trip took several weeks. I remember my mother talking about the trip and how Dad was sick all the way and had no desire to eat. Mom had no problem with seasickness and recalled how she gained so much weight eating Dad’s share.

A short time after, they moved to a small community called St. Paul de Buton, a few miles from St. Damien and opened a general store similar to my grandfathers. He sold everything and anything, served as a barber, dentist and sold gas for the automobile which was beginning to be a new mode of transportation.
