Standing: Aunt Mariam ( Marji ) Kays and Joe Kays Seated : Adele and Tom Kays Adele, and Tom Kays CHILDREN OF MARIAM AND JOE KAYS 1. THOMAS KAYS (1932) was born in Charlottetown . I was only year older than Tom. We went to the same school so I saw him quite often. Tom was a very smart student. He went to Queen Square School and Prince of Wales College. However in his early teens it became obvious that he had a sight problem and gradually lost most of his sight. He sought the advice of qualified professionals in the field but there was no cure up until now for his condition. He was quite involved in the Scouting movement with Abe and I since we were first cousins. He did not finish Prince of Wales College, but did take a special course in piano tuning and became very successful in that profession. I always admired him for his determination and positive outlook in life. His handicap did not prevent him from being active. He enjoyed skating, walking and followed the stock market. He learned to read Braille and kept up to date on local and national events. He was very active on the Canadian Institute for the Blind and served many capacities for that organization. Tom married Olga Payzant in 1982. 2. ADELE KAYS (1934) was born in Charlottetown and went to Notre Dame Academy in Charlottetown . She was a bit of a rebel and was sent to Convent in Miscouche a few miles west of Summerside but did not stay very long. You often hear that some people are prone to accidents. Well, Adele certainly filled that category. When Tom and I came back from Boy Scout camp, she ran across the street to meet us and was hit by a car. She was in serious condition for several months. Another time a snowplough was turning around the corner where she lived and somehow she got caught underneath the plough. Several times when we saw her she would have a broken arm, broken leg or some other injury. 73
