--------------------------------------------------------- The Basilica Recreation Centre - Before and After CHAPTER 9: MURPHY'S COMMUNITY CENTRE On June 30th, 2006 the Guardian reported that the Basilica Recreation Centre was under new ownership. Ray Murphy , a well-known pharmacist and philanthropist took more than one year to finalize a deal with St. Dunstan's parish. Now called the Murphy's Community Centre, it maintains its non-profit status, and the main objective is to increase and improve the educational, recreational and social opportunities for people living and working in both Charlottetown and the rest of Prince Edward Island . The centre maintains an open door policy, where everyone is welcome to drop in and discuss their needs or ideas for new programs. The purpose of Murphy's Community Centre continues to be, first and foremost, to serve the people of the community. All of the programs, special events and rentals are arranged with this in mind, and it is in this spirit that the centre continues to nurture the youth, adults and seniors, into a happier and healthier future. In the short period of time since the facility became Murphy's Community Centre, it has been a beehive of activity: dances for teens and adults, coffee houses, bingo four nights a week, an after school program, child care services, seniors' meal and events programs, a knit-a-mitt program, a walking and jogging club, movie nights, a second storey youth centre, youth outreach sports, a college of piping, al-anon, stretch yoga, kung fu, and bowling for all ages. It's difficult to find a healthy living initiative in Charlottetown that doesn't include a contribution in some form from Ray and Carolyn Murphy. "A healthy community is about more than taking medication," says Mr. Murphy , and it's certainly a philosophy he has put into action. 63
