Bill was elected to city council and later when Shawn became a Member of Parliament. She rarely offered advice, and was never judgmental, but at the same time was able to express her views in her own unique way. Shawn always knew exactly where she stood on the issues. In the fall of 1999, the Murphys invaded Ireland. Five of Kathleen’s sons — Shawn, D’Arcy, Kevin, Michael and Stephen — accompanied her to Ireland for a 10 day vacation. Kathleen had visited Ireland with Bill in the past, and she looked forward to going back and looking up old friends from that previous visit. Stephen drove one while Michael drove the other. For reasons no one can explain, Kathleen ended up in the back seat of Stephen’s car. The mistake soon became apparent. Kathleen almost always sits in the front seat, and Stephen lacked experience driving on the left hand side of the road as is the law throughout Ireland. The next day, they turned in the two cars for a van. Michael was designated as the driver because he was used to that driving pattern from living in the Cayman Islands.
