r4^ei/ The hall The hall in Iona was constructed in 1914 during the pas¬ torate of the energetic and much-beloved Father M.J. Smith . Stories from older residents indicate that the hall was widely used from its early days with such events as plays, debates and political meetings being a notable part of its activities. Its position on the crown of the hill and just across the road from the church and rectory added significantly to the prominence of the parish cluster of buildings. My first recollection of the hall was its use during parish picnics in the mid to late 1930s. The hall and grounds on those occasions were the scene of great activity, with more than enough to whet the interest of young and old alike. The odor of cigar smoke, the fancy attire of many patrons and the frequent sounds of Yankee accents indicated clearly that these picnics attracted people from "away", as well as from the entire parish and nearby communities. Two annual autumn events in the hall for many years were the bean supper and the chicken supper, with the latter being by far the more memorable of the two and taking place in October. The chicken supper was discussed and prepared over many days. A wide host of workers was arranged, with the women leading the way with their fine baking, culminating in large boxes of food from each household arriving at the hall on the evening in question. The supper itself was a delight with all kinds of goodies to round out the hot chicken dinner. Tables were lined up across the stage, giving the event added dignity. The
