1956. There was no money to buy, or build, so the search began for an old garage, shed, or anything half-decent that could be moved and refurbished. George (Bus) Peake was, apart from the operation of his insurance business, involved in the local militia, and by pulling a few strings arranged for the Club to have possession of a 14' x 22' building in the Brighton Compound that was slated for demolition. I well recall the evening that Bus Peake, Hugh Simpson, Ollie Harper, and I went to look it over. The building was located just inside the fence off the Brighton Road and fell into the "less-than-half- decent" category. It had obviously served at some point in time as a canteen, because the lift-—up hatches were still intact. More recently it had been a coal and storage shed, the door was off and the floor was rotted out but when the alternative was nothing, it looked pretty good--so we accepted it.
