letter was published on the Internet on July 1, 1999. It has been pub- lished regularly since then and the 87th edition is now up on our site.

The Internet proved its value almost from the very beginning. Ivan was able to quickly shoot down some misconceptions about the early days in Guernsey Cove. The common belief was that all the residents of the community rushed down to the beach when the Becks arrived. The truth was there was no one living there in 1813. The Guernsey people settled on Machon’s Point in Murray Harbour and there was nothing but unbroken forest in Guernsey Cove and no welcoming neighbours.

Now with John, Clive, and Ivan all working online they could more easily share information about the Beck family. We got a big break in late 2011 when Clive found a copy of Samuel Killick’s will and passed it on to us. Samuel was Vere’s grandfather, and the will contained a lot of valuable information. We learned that Vere had a sister, Lydia, and two brothers living at that time. We also learned that Samuel Killick had a very low opinion of Lydia’s husband, Isaac Bull, and directed that he was not to receive a penny of his money.

Between bonds and real estate, Lucy Beck, Vere’s mother received more than $250,000 in today’s funds. She died about 2 years later leaving her daughter Lydia as an executor. A careful reading of the will and other documents convinced Ivan that Lydia and her hus- band had serious money problems because the will was presented for probate the day after the funeral. Clive jumped on that and found evidence that Isaac Bull, Lydia’s husband, ended up in debtor's prison a few months later. John Marfleet also helped on this story and they were able to establish that it was six years before Isaac was free again.

Another example of Internet co-operation dealt with the entire John Beck family being listed in a church registry in Scotland. The re- cord was found by John Marfleet and left us all scratching our heads. How could information about John Beck’s family end up in the re- cords of a small church just outside Glasgow? Finally Ivan searched to find out what people did in that community and we were surprised to learn there was a brisk trade in textiles there, including calico printing, John Beck’s trade. John Marfleet went searching and found
