We considered a number of wild possibilities and dismissed them all. Then I organized the list by date of birth and looked at what we had. It showed that the two young- est members of the family had been christened at Old Kilpatrick. I realized that the family had to have been living there at that time. A quick check showed that calico printing was a local industry there.

Armed with that information John Marfleet searched another da- tabase and discovered that the Becks were living in the nearby com- munity of Little Miln. Fortunately for us the clergyman, who con- ducted the baptisms of the two younger children, also wrote down the names and birth dates of all the older children. They were not in any particular order, so I’ve rearranged them:
