died on February 28, 1867, at the age of 79.
She left her home in England at the age of 24 and spent 55 years as a pioneer homemaker in Guernsey Cove. Her descendants have spread to the four corners of the earth but she herself probably never travelled farther than five miles from her home in Guernsey Cove in all the time she lived there. That’s not to say that she was perfectly happy in PE.L. There are reports that she was homesick and often pined for her home and relatives back in England.
Rosa Bell (1.9.5,3,) wrote about that in an article in 1979. She said that, “Elizabeth knew the pangs of homesickness and loneliness. At times she would walk to the shores of Northumberland Strait, where their home was located, and look longingly toward the horizon. Their endurance and strength of character must have been severely tested”
Rosa was not the only descendant to comment on this situation. Ron Harris remembers hearing similar stories from his mother, Zet- tie, (1.4.6.5,). Ron could not recall his mother’s exact words, but he remembers the impression they made on him. He said he felt very sad after hearing the story.
The second death in the Beck home in the 1860s was William and Jane’s oldest child, Selena Elizabeth. She died on July 30, 1867, at the age of 12.
Her mother, Jane, died the following year on April 23, 1868. The cause of her death is not known, but it may have been due to com- plications following the birth of her last child, William Windsor, on February 3 of that year.
Jane was only 37 when she died and had only been a Beck for 14 years, but she left a large mark on the family. Her second name of Windsor has been passed down through William's line generation after generation. Perhaps the best known of the ” Windsors” was Bar- tholomew Windsor Beck (1.10B.7.8.) who lived on and farmed the Beck place until he moved to a nursing home in the 1980s. Windsor hosted a number of the early Beck reunions on the farm at Guernsey Cove.
The youngest “Windsor” we are aware of is Windsor Foster Beck, (1.10A.3.2.2.1.1.) grandson of Alan Windsor Beck. He was born June
