Thomas was a shipbuilder and they moved to Pugwash, N.S., and
later settled in Parrsboro.
Ter Ey The next child was Martha
Lucy, who was born in Newington,
on September 17, 1811. She wasn’t
quite two when the family arrived
in PE.I. She had a lot in common
with her sister, Elizabeth. Mar-
tha married Peter Roberts, also a
shipbuilder, and likely a brother

_ of Thomas. Peter and Martha also
____ hadeight children. While the men
_ were building ships in Pugwash,
| the sisters were partners in a local
shop. Martha was only 54 when

she died on July 20, 1865.

The third child was Mary Ann who was born July 7, 1813. She was
the first of the Beck family to be born in Prince Edward Island. She
married William Derby and they had one daughter. There are reports
that she may have kept a diary. If so she must have learned to read
and write at home. The first school in Guernsey Cove opened in
1834 after Mary was grown up.

The next child and first son was John who was born on January
25, 1815, in Guernsey Cove. Even
though he was 5’11 he was still the
shortest man in his family. He had
brown eyes and small feet with a |
high instep. Will Jordan said he |_

John was a good natured man |
and was very neat and tidy about
everything. He married Elizabeth }
Sencabaugh, a granddaughter of }
William Sencabaugh, who was a |
